Ramanuja Mantra

रामानुज मन्त्र
Also known as: Ramanujacharya, Propounder of Vishishtadvaita, Sri Vaishnava
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Ramanuja Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Ramanujacharya (1017–1137 CE), the foremost preceptor of the Sri Vaishnava tradition and the systematic exponent of Vishishtadvaita (qualified non-dualism). This mantra is not found in the Vedas but is derived from the medieval Sri Vaishnava Agamas and the works of the Alvars, as recorded in the Divya Prabandham. The primary form of the mantra is "Om Ramanujaya Namah," which is a twelve-syllable (dvadashakshara) mantra. The beejakshara "Om" represents the primordial sound and the ultimate reality, while "Ramanujaya" is the dative form of the name Ramanuja, meaning "to Ramanuja." "Namah" signifies salutation and surrender.

According to the Sri Bhashya, Ramanuja's commentary on the Brahma Sutras, the mantra embodies the principle of prapatti (complete surrender) as the means to liberation. The Vedartha Sangraha, another of his works, emphasizes that the acharya is the mediator of divine grace. The mantra is chanted for deepening devotion (bhakti), cultivating humility, and seeking the blessings of Ramanuja for spiritual guidance. It is traditionally recited 108 times daily, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east.

The recommended ritual setting includes offering tulsi leaves and performing archana (ritual worship) to an image or yantra of Ramanuja. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with reverence and not for material gains; it is best received from a qualified Sri Vaishnava guru. The mantra is especially potent on Ramanuja Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the acharya, and during the month of Margashirsha. The phoneme analysis reveals that "Ra" (रा) is associated with Agni and purification, "Ma" (मा) with Lakshmi and prosperity, "Nu" (नु) with nourishment, and "Ja" (ज) with victory.

The mantra's vibration aligns the chanter with the lineage of Sri Vaishnava acharyas, fostering a sense of surrender and devotion. Tradition holds that regular chanting removes obstacles on the path of bhakti and bestows the grace of the Lord Narayana through the acharya's intercession.
