Shani

शनि
Also known as: Sanaischara
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Gayatri mantra for Shani (Saturn) is a Vedic-style invocation found in later Puranic and Tantric traditions, though its structure follows the classical Gayatri meter. The mantra is: 'Om Sanaischaraya Vidmahe Mandaya Dhimahi Tanno Shani Prachodayat'. This translates to: 'Om, let us meditate on the slow-moving one (Sanaischara); may that dark one (Manda) inspire our intellect; may Shani illuminate our path.' The deity Shani is the son of Surya (Sun) and Chhaya (shadow), as described in the Puranas such as the Markandeya Purana. Shani is associated with the planet Saturn and is considered the dispenser of karmic justice, rewarding or punishing based on one's deeds.

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) for Shani is 'Om Sham' or 'Om Shanaischaraya Namah', but the Gayatri form emphasizes the meditative aspect. Phonetically, the mantra contains the 'Sha' sound (as in Shani), which is believed to activate the subtle energy of discipline and patience. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (a key Tantric text), this mantra is chanted for protection from misfortune, removal of obstacles, and to cultivate patience and karmic balance. The Devi Mahatmya also references the importance of planetary deities in overcoming adversities.

Traditionally, the mantra is chanted 108 times on Saturdays, preferably during the morning or evening, facing south. The recommended count for significant results is 108,000 repetitions (one lakh) over a period. Ritual setting includes wearing black or dark blue clothing, offering black sesame seeds, mustard oil, or iron items to a Shani idol or yantra. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with reverence and focus, as Shani is a stern deity; it is not recommended for casual or disrespectful use.

Those undergoing the Sade Sati (seven-and-a-half-year transit of Saturn) are advised to chant this mantra under guidance. The mantra is also found in the Jyotisha texts as a remedial measure for afflictions caused by Saturn in one's horoscope.
