Siddha Kunjika Stotram

सिद्ध कुञ्जिका स्तोत्रम्
Also known as: Kunjika Stotram, Durga Saptashati Key, Tantric Key
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Siddha Kunjika Stotram is a highly revered hymn found within the Durga Saptashati (also known as the Devi Mahatmya), which is part of the Markandeya Purana. This stotra is traditionally regarded as the 'key' (kunjika) that unlocks the full spiritual potency of the Devi Mahatmya. According to the Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11, verses 3-5), the recitation of this stotra before chanting the Saptashati ensures that the devotee attains the complete fruit of the entire text. The stotra is composed in a mix of anushtubh and tristubh meters and consists of 21 verses, each verse invoking various aspects of the Goddess Durga (Chandi). The beej-aksharas (seed syllables) such as 'Hreem', 'Kleem', and 'Dum' are embedded within the verses, which are considered to activate the mantra's energy.

Phonetically, the repetition of these bijas creates a specific resonance that aligns the chanter's subtle body with the Devi's shakti. The traditional purpose of this stotra is to remove obstacles, grant quick results (siddhi), provide protection from negative forces, and fulfill material and spiritual desires. It is especially recommended for those seeking rapid progress in tantric sadhana. The ideal chanting context is during the early morning or evening, after bathing and wearing clean clothes, facing east or north. The prescribed count is 11, 21, or 108 times, especially during Navaratri or on Ashtami and Navami.

Some traditions recommend chanting it before reciting the Durga Saptashati to ensure the efficacy of the entire path. Cautions: This stotra is considered highly potent and should be chanted with proper pronunciation and devotion. It is advised to avoid chanting during periods of impurity (such as menstruation or mourning) unless initiated by a guru. The Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 7) also references the Kunjika as a key to unlocking the Devi's grace, emphasizing its tantric nature. The Shaktisangama Tantra mentions that the Siddha Kunjika Stotram is a condensed form of the Devi's essence, capable of granting all siddhis when chanted with faith.
