Sri Yantra Sthapana Mantra

श्री यन्त्र स्थापन मन्त्र
Also known as: Yantra Establishment, Sri Chakra Sthapana, Installation
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Sri Yantra Sthapana Mantra is a set of sacred syllables and invocations used in the ritual installation (sthapana) of the Sri Yantra, also known as the Sri Chakra. This yantra is the primary geometric representation of the goddess Tripura Sundari, the supreme deity in the Sri Vidya tradition. The mantra's textual origins are found in tantric works such as the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (chapters on yantra prana-pratishtha) and the *Shaktisangama Tantra*, which detail the procedures for infusing life force (prana) into the yantra. The core of the sthapana mantra often includes the beej-akshara 'Hreem' (ह्रीं), which is the mula-bija of Tripura Sundari, representing the combined energies of creation, preservation, and dissolution.

Phonetically, 'Hreem' consists of the seed syllables 'Ha', 'Ra', 'Ee', and 'Ma', each corresponding to specific tattvas and deities. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to invoke the presence of the goddess into the yantra, transforming it from a mere diagram into a living conduit of divine energy. According to the *Devi Mahatmya* and *Lalita Sahasranama*, the Sri Yantra is the cosmic form of the goddess, and its installation is essential for effective worship. The benefits of chanting this mantra include the removal of obstacles in spiritual practice, the attainment of siddhis (spiritual powers), and the fulfillment of material desires when performed with proper intent.

Recommended chanting context: the mantra is typically recited during the installation ceremony, which should be conducted on an auspicious day (e.g., full moon or Navaratri) and at a clean, sanctified space. The practitioner should face east or north, and chant the mantra 108 times using a rudraksha or sphatika mala. Ritual setting includes offerings of flowers, incense, and lamp, and the yantra should be placed on a metal or wooden platform. Cautions: the sthapana mantra should be chanted only after receiving initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru in the Sri Vidya tradition, as improper recitation may lead to adverse effects.

The mantra is considered highly potent and must be treated with reverence; it should not be chanted casually or without understanding its significance. The installation process is a key component of Sri Vidya upasana, and the mantra is often combined with the Mula Mantra of Tripura Sundari for complete energization.
