Surya Dhyana Mantra

सूर्य ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Sun Meditation, Solar Energy, Surya Upasana
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Surya Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation dedicated to Surya, the solar deity in Hindu tradition. Its textual origins are found in the Surya Purana and the Rigveda, where Surya is extolled as the source of light, life, and cosmic order (Rigveda 1.115.1). The mantra often incorporates the beej-akshara 'Hram' (ह्रां), which in tantric phonetics represents the solar energy and the fire element (agni-tattva). According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, this seed syllable activates the manipura chakra and enhances vitality. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to invoke Surya's blessings for health, illumination, and the absorption of solar energy.

It is chanted to remove obstacles, dispel ignorance, and promote physical and mental strength. The recommended chanting context includes early morning at sunrise, facing east, after bathing and wearing clean clothes. A count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala is typical. The ritual setting may involve offering water (arghya) to the sun while reciting. Cautions include avoiding chanting during eclipses or at noon without proper purification, as per tantric guidelines.

The mantra is central to yogic and tantric practices, as described in the Shaktisangama Tantra, where Surya is meditated upon as the inner self (atman). The Surya Dhyana Mantra is also associated with the Gayatri Mantra and the Aditya Hridayam, a hymn from the Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda 107) that Lord Rama recited for victory. This mantra is worshiped pan-India and globally, with special observance during festivals like Ratha Saptami and Surya Puja. Its iconography depicts Surya as a radiant being riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, symbolizing the seven colors of light and the days of the week. Regular practice is believed to bestow vitality, health, illumination, and spiritual insight.
