Tejas Mantra

तेजस् मन्त्र
Also known as: Metabolic Fire Mantra, Digestive Health, Agni Mantra
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Tejas Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to tejas, the principle of metabolic fire and radiant vitality within the body. Its textual origins are found in the Upanishads and Ayurvedic classics; the term tejas appears prominently in the Chandogya Upanishad (6.2.1) as one of the three primary elements (tejas, ap, anna) that constitute the universe. In Ayurveda, tejas is the subtle essence of pitta dosha, governing digestion, metabolism, and intellectual radiance, as described in the Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 12.8). The mantra is associated with the deities Agni (the god of fire) and Surya (the sun), both embodiments of transformative light and heat.

The core beej-akshara is derived from the syllable 'te', which resonates with the manipura chakra (solar plexus), the seat of digestive fire. The phoneme 'ja' in tejas carries a dynamic, activating quality, while the final 's' is a subtle sibilant that channels energy upward. Traditional purposes include kindling agni (digestive fire) for healthy digestion, balancing metabolism, and enhancing personal radiance (ojas). The mantra is chanted to purify the subtle channels and remove blockages that cause sluggish digestion or low energy.

Recommended chanting context: ideally recited 108 times daily at sunrise or before meals, facing east, with the right hand placed on the navel. A ritual setting may include offering ghee into a small fire (homa) while chanting. Cautions: those with hyperacidity or excessive pitta should chant with moderation, as overstimulation of agni can aggravate heat conditions. The mantra is also found in the Yoga Sutras (3.40) where mastery of tejas leads to luminous perception.

According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (7.23), the Tejas Mantra is a subsidiary of the Agni Gayatri and is used in purification rites. Regular chanting is said to bestow a glowing complexion, sharp intellect, and robust digestive power.
