Universal Healing OM Mantra

सार्वभौम हीलिङ्ग ॐ मन्त्र
Also known as: OM Healing, Universal Sound, Primordial Vibration
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The universal healing mantra OM, also known as Pranava, is the primordial sound from which the entire cosmos is said to have emanated. According to the Mandukya Upanishad (verse 1), OM is the imperishable sound, the essence of all existence, encompassing the three states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep, and beyond them the fourth state of pure consciousness. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (I.27-28) declare that the designation of Ishvara is Pranava (OM), and its repetition and contemplation lead to the removal of obstacles and the realization of the inner Self. As a healing mantra, OM is chanted to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit, aligning the individual with the universal vibration.

The beej-akshara OM is composed of three phonemes: A, U, and M, representing creation, preservation, and dissolution, as well as the three gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas). The resonance of OM is believed to balance the chakras, calm the nervous system, and promote physical and emotional well-being. Traditional practice recommends chanting OM 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or dusk, in a seated posture with eyes closed, focusing on the vibration in the heart or crown chakra. The Mantra Mahodadhi (chapter 2) emphasizes that OM is the root of all mantras and its repetition purifies the mind and removes negative karma.

While OM is universally accessible and has no strict restrictions, it is advised to chant with proper pronunciation and reverence. The healing benefits are enhanced when chanted with sincere devotion and awareness of its cosmic significance. OM is also used in group healing sessions and meditation retreats, where its collective vibration amplifies the therapeutic effect. As the sound of the Absolute, OM transcends all boundaries and is worshiped globally as the source of all healing and wholeness.
