Vastu Purusha Shanti Mantra

वास्तु पुरुष शान्ति मन्त्र
Also known as: Vastu Peace, Space Deity, Building Harmony
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Vastu Purusha Shanti Mantra is a sacred invocation aimed at pacifying the Vastu Purusha, the presiding deity of space and architecture in Hindu tradition. The concept of Vastu Purusha is rooted in the Vastu Shastra texts, such as the 'Vishwakarma Vastu Shastra' and the 'Mayamata', which describe the Vastu Purusha as a cosmic being whose body represents the layout of a building or site. According to the 'Vastu Purusha Mandala', a diagram found in these scriptures, the deity lies with his head in the northeast and feet in the southwest, and his various limbs correspond to different zones of a structure. The mantra is typically chanted during the foundation-laying ceremony (Bhoomi Puja) or before entering a new home (Griha Pravesh) to seek the deity's blessings for harmony, prosperity, and protection.

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Om' is often included, as it is considered the primordial sound that aligns cosmic energies. Phonetically, the mantra emphasizes the syllables 'Shanti' (peace) and 'Vastu' (dwelling), which are believed to resonate with the spatial frequencies of the building. The 'Agamas', particularly the 'Kamikagama', prescribe the chanting of this mantra 108 times using a rudraksha mala, preferably during the auspicious time of sunrise or after sunset. The purpose is to neutralize any negative energies or doshas (flaws) in the land or construction, as detailed in the 'Vastu Shastra' texts.

Additionally, the 'Mantra Mahodadhi' mentions that such peace mantras are essential for removing obstacles and ensuring the well-being of the inhabitants. The recommended ritual setting includes a clean, sanctified space with offerings of flowers, incense, and a lamp. Cautions include avoiding chanting during eclipses or inauspicious lunar phases, and maintaining purity of body and mind. This mantra is pan-Indian in worship, with variations found in regional traditions, but its core purpose remains the pacification of the Vastu Purusha for a harmonious living environment.
