Vijnana Bhairava Mantra

विज्ञान भैरव मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhairava Tantra, 112 Dhyanas, Consciousness Techniques
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Vijnana Bhairava Mantra refers to the core teachings of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, a seminal text of the Kashmir Shaiva tradition. This scripture presents 112 distinct methods (dhyanas) for realizing the ultimate reality of consciousness (cit). The mantra is not a single syllabic formula but rather a set of contemplative techniques, each accompanied by a seed-sound or phrase that guides the practitioner into direct experience. The text is structured as a dialogue between Bhairava (Shiva) and Bhairavi (Devi), where Bhairava reveals these methods in response to her inquiry about the nature of reality.

According to the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra (verse 1-2), Bhairavi asks: 'O Lord, what is the essence of the reality? How can one attain the state of Bhairava?' The subsequent verses detail techniques such as focusing on the breath, gazing at empty space, or meditating on the void between thoughts. The beej-aksharas (seed syllables) like 'Hrim' or 'Ksham' appear in some methods, but the primary emphasis is on awareness itself. The traditional purpose is to attain liberation (moksha) by recognizing one's identity with pure consciousness.

The mantra is chanted for meditation practice, spiritual awakening, and the grace of Bhairava. Recommended chanting context includes a quiet setting, preferably at dawn or dusk, with a count of 108 repetitions per technique. The Vijnana Bhairava Tantra (verse 163) states that even one method practiced with devotion leads to the supreme state. Cautions: These techniques require proper guidance from a qualified guru, as some methods involve intense concentration that may disturb the mind if practiced incorrectly.

The text is also referenced in the Tantraloka of Abhinavagupta, which elaborates on its philosophical underpinnings.
