Vyakarana Vedanga Dhyana Mantra

व्याकरण वेदाङ्ग ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Vyakarana, Sanskrit Grammar, Panini
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Vyakarana Vedanga Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation directed toward the Vedanga of Vyakarana, the auxiliary discipline of Vedic study that deals with Sanskrit grammar. Vyakarana is considered the mouth of the Vedapurusha, as stated in the Mundaka Upanishad (1.1.5), which describes the six Vedangas as the limbs of the Veda. This mantra is traditionally chanted to invoke the blessings of the sage Panini, the author of the Ashtadhyayi, and the goddess of speech, Vak, for clarity in understanding and applying grammatical rules. The Ashtadhyayi (4.1.1-4.4.166) itself is the foundational text of Sanskrit grammar, and the Mahabhashya of Patanjali provides extensive commentary on it.

The dhyana mantra often includes the beej-akshara 'Om' and may incorporate syllables such as 'Hrim' or 'Aim' to invoke divine wisdom and speech. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 2), such dhyana mantras are used to focus the mind before study, aligning the practitioner with the subtle energies of grammar and language. The purpose of chanting this mantra is to gain mastery over the structure of language, to preserve the purity of Vedic recitation, and to deepen one's understanding of the grammatical sutras. Traditional benefits include improved memory, analytical thinking, and the ability to correctly interpret Vedic texts.

The recommended chanting context is during the Brahma Muhurta (early morning) or before a study session, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. The practitioner should sit facing east or north, in a clean and quiet space, and meditate on the form of Panini holding a book or on the syllable 'Om' representing Vak. Cautions include avoiding chanting during impure states (e.g., after meals or without bathing) and maintaining strict pronunciation accuracy, as errors in mantra chanting are believed to produce adverse effects according to the Shaktisangama Tantra. This mantra is especially revered by Sanskrit scholars and is often recited during the annual Sanskrit study festivals.
