Lakshmi Gayatri

लक्ष्मी गायत्री
Also known as: Sri Gayatri, Mahalakshmi Gayatri, Dhana Gayatri
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Lakshmi Gayatri is a Vedic-style Gayatri mantra dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu and the deity of prosperity, abundance, and auspiciousness. This mantra appears in the Lakshmi Tantra, a Pancharatra Agama text that elaborates on the worship of Lakshmi as the supreme goddess. The mantra is also referenced in various Puranas, such as the Skanda Purana and the Padma Purana, where it is prescribed for attaining wealth and fortune. The beej-akshara 'Om' precedes the standard Gayatri meter, invoking the universal consciousness.

The phonemes 'Mahalakshmyai' (to the great Lakshmi), 'Vidmahe' (we meditate), 'Vishnu Patnyai' (to the consort of Vishnu), 'Dhimahi' (we contemplate), and 'Tanno Lakshmi Prachodayat' (may that Lakshmi inspire us) form a prayer for divine guidance and material well-being. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, a medieval compendium of mantras, the Lakshmi Gayatri is chanted for removing poverty, attracting wealth, and enhancing beauty and grace. It is believed to bestow both material prosperity (artha) and spiritual fulfillment (moksha). Traditional purpose includes invoking the grace of Lakshmi for success in business, financial stability, and domestic harmony.

The recommended chanting context is during the morning or evening, especially on Fridays, which are considered auspicious for Lakshmi worship. The ideal count is 108 repetitions using a rosary (japa mala) of lotus seeds or crystal. Ritual setting includes a clean altar with an image or yantra of Lakshmi, offerings of red flowers, incense, and sweets. Chanting during Diwali and Navaratri is particularly meritorious.

Cautions: The mantra should be chanted with proper pronunciation and devotion; it is traditionally advised to avoid chanting during periods of impurity (e.g., menstruation) unless initiated by a guru. The Lakshmi Gayatri is a powerful tool for aligning oneself with the energy of abundance, but it must be practiced with ethical intent and gratitude.
