Ashta Nidhi Mantra

अष्ट निधि मन्त्र
Also known as: Eight Nidhis, Kubera's Treasures, Wealth Stores
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Ashta Nidhi Mantra is a set of eight distinct mantras, each dedicated to one of the eight treasures (nidhis) of Kubera, the lord of wealth in Hindu tradition. These nidhis are named Padma, Mahapadma, Makara, Kachchapa, Mukunda, Nanda, Nila, and Sankha. The primary textual source for the Ashta Nidhi is the Kubera Purana, which describes these treasures as divine manifestations of wealth and abundance. Additionally, the Vishnu Purana (Book 4, Chapter 10) enumerates the eight nidhis and associates them with Kubera's sovereignty over riches. Each mantra typically follows the structure "Om [Nidhi Name] Nidhaye Namah," where the beej (seed) syllable is implicit in the name itself.

For example, "Om Padma Nidhaye Namah" invokes the Padma nidhi, which is associated with the lotus and symbolizes prosperity. The phonetics of these mantras are designed to resonate with the energy of each treasure, aligning the chanter's consciousness with abundance. Traditionally, these mantras are chanted for the attainment of specific treasures, comprehensive wealth, and the blessings of Kubera. The purpose extends beyond material gain to include spiritual richness, as each nidhi also represents a divine quality. Recommended chanting context includes reciting each mantra 108 times during the bright fortnight of the lunar month, especially on Fridays or during Dhanteras and Kubera Puja.

The ideal time is early morning after bathing, facing east or north. A ritual setting may involve a yantra or image of Kubera, along with offerings of flowers, incense, and sweets. Cautions include the need for purity of intention and regularity; these mantras should not be used for selfish or harmful purposes. According to the Shaktisangama Tantra, the Ashta Nidhi mantras are powerful and should be received from a qualified guru to ensure proper pronunciation and efficacy. Chanting without faith or with impure motives may yield adverse results.

Overall, the Ashta Nidhi Mantra is a profound tool for invoking the eightfold abundance of the universe.
