Garima Siddhi Mantra

गरिमा सिद्धि मन्त्र
Also known as: Heaviness, Immovability, Becoming Heavy
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Garima Siddhi Mantra is a sacred invocation for the attainment of garima siddhi, one of the eight classical yogic powers (ashta siddhi) described in texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (Vibhuti Pada, sutras on siddhis) and the Puranas, including the Shiva Purana and Vishnu Purana. Garima siddhi grants the practitioner the ability to become infinitely heavy and immovable, embodying the quality of stability and unshakeable steadiness. This mantra is primarily associated with Lord Shiva, who is often depicted as the immovable, eternal ascetic, and with Lord Vishnu, who upholds the cosmos with steadfastness. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Gam' or 'Grim' is sometimes used in variations of this mantra, with 'Ga' representing the quality of heaviness and 'Ra' denoting fire or energy that transforms into stability.

The mantra 'Om Garimne Namah' is a common form, where 'Garimne' is the dative case of 'Gariman' (heaviness), invoking the principle of weight. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, such siddhi mantras are chanted for mastery over the elements, particularly the earth element (prithvi tattva), which governs solidity and mass. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to cultivate inner stability, grounding, and the power to resist external forces, both physically and mentally. It is also used in yogic practices to deepen meditation by making the body feel heavy and rooted, preventing distraction.

Recommended chanting context includes early morning or during meditation, with a count of 108 repetitions (one mala) daily for 40 days, preferably in a seated posture on the ground. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with reverence and under the guidance of a qualified guru, as the siddhi can manifest literally, causing the body to become immovable, which may be dangerous in certain situations. It is not recommended for casual use or without proper purification practices (sadhana). The mantra is also linked to the concept of 'sthirata' (steadiness) in the Bhagavata Purana, where devotees seek unshakable faith.

In summary, the Garima Siddhi Mantra is a powerful tool for achieving immovability and stability, rooted in ancient yogic and tantric traditions.
