Mukta Mantra

मुक्ता मन्त्र
Also known as: Pearl Gemstone, Moon Gem, Mukta
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mukta Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to the pearl (mukta), the gemstone intimately associated with the Moon (Chandra) in Hindu gemology. According to the Ratna Shastra, a classical treatise on gems, the pearl is born from raindrops absorbed by oysters under the influence of the Moon, and thus it embodies the cooling, soothing energy of Chandra. The mantra is chanted to invoke the blessings of the Moon deity for emotional balance, mental peace, fertility, and overall harmony. In Jyotisha texts, the Moon governs the mind (manas) and emotions; a well-placed Moon bestows calmness, creativity, and nurturing qualities.

The Mukta Mantra is therefore recommended for those seeking to pacify a disturbed mind, enhance intuition, and attract lunar grace. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) often associated with this mantra is 'Om' followed by 'Chandraya Namah', which aligns with the standard Chandra mantra found in the Mantra Mahodadhi. The phoneme 'Ch' in 'Chandra' is a dental palatal, believed to stimulate the throat and crown chakras, promoting clarity and serenity. Traditional purposes include mitigating the malefic effects of a weak or afflicted Moon in one's horoscope, improving relationships, and fostering emotional stability.

The mantra is ideally chanted on Mondays, the day ruled by the Moon, and during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) for maximum benefit. A recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, using a white or crystal rosary (japa mala). Ritual setting includes facing north or east, wearing white clothes, and offering white flowers, rice, and sandalwood paste to a picture or symbol of Chandra. Cautions: The mantra should not be chanted during lunar eclipses or on new moon nights (Amavasya) without proper guidance, as these periods are considered inauspicious for lunar worship.

Additionally, those with excessive kapha or water-related imbalances should consult a qualified guru before intensive practice. The Mukta Mantra remains a powerful tool for aligning with the gentle, nourishing energy of the Moon, as affirmed by both Ratna Shastra and Jyotisha traditions.
