Nidhi Mantra

निधि मन्त्र
Also known as: Treasure Mantras, Nine Nidhis, Kubera's Treasures
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Nidhi Mantras are a set of nine sacred invocations addressed to the nine treasures (nidhis) of Kubera, the god of wealth, as described in the Kubera Purana and various Tantric texts. Each nidhi—Padma, Mahapadma, Makara, Kachchapa, Mukunda, Nanda, Nila, Sankha, and Kharva—represents a specific form of prosperity, such as jewels, grains, precious metals, or divine abundance. The mantras are typically composed of bija (seed) syllables that correspond to the elemental and planetary energies of each treasure. For instance, the mantra for Padma Nidhi, 'Om Padma Nidhaye Namah', invokes the lotus-born treasure associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune.

According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, these mantras are chanted to attract specific types of wealth and to remove obstacles to material prosperity. The traditional purpose includes not only material gain but also spiritual abundance, as the nidhis are considered manifestations of the divine opulence of Kubera and Lakshmi. Recommended chanting context includes early morning or during Kubera Puja, especially on Dhanteras. The count is typically 108 repetitions per nidhi, using a rosary of yellow or white beads.

Ritual setting involves a clean altar with images of Kubera and the nine symbols (lotus, conch, tortoise, crocodile, etc.). Cautions: These mantras should be chanted with pure intent and after receiving proper initiation from a guru, as per Tantric tradition, to avoid adverse effects. The Shaktisangama Tantra emphasizes that the nidhi mantras are powerful and must be used respectfully, with offerings of flowers, incense, and food. They are not recommended for those seeking wealth through unethical means.

The nine nidhis are also mentioned in the Devi Mahatmya as treasures that the goddess bestows upon her devotees. Overall, the Nidhi Mantras are a comprehensive system for invoking divine abundance in all aspects of life.
