Padma Nidhi Dhyana Mantra

पद्म निधि ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Padma Nidhi Dhyana, Lotus Treasure, Kubera's First Treasure
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Padma Nidhi Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation focused on Padma Nidhi, the foremost of the nine treasures (nidhis) of Kubera, the god of wealth. According to the Kubera Purana, the nidhis are divine gems that embody different aspects of prosperity, and Padma Nidhi is associated with the lotus (padma), symbolizing expansion, purity, and abundance. The mantra is used for visualization practices aimed at attracting wealth that grows organically, like a lotus unfolding. The deity associated with this mantra is primarily Kubera, but also Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, as the lotus is her emblem.

The Lakshmi Tantra, a Vaishnava Agama text, describes the lotus as the seat of Lakshmi and a symbol of spiritual and material prosperity. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) implied in the dhyana is 'Om', which precedes the name of the nidhi. The phonetics of 'Padma' (पद्म) resonate with the earth element (prithvi), grounding the practitioner, while 'Nidhi' (निधि) invokes the concept of a hidden treasure. Traditional purposes include meditating on a radiant lotus at the heart or in the hands of Kubera, visualizing its petals unfolding to release wealth and blessings.

Recommended chanting context: ideally performed during the bright fortnight (shukla paksha), especially on Fridays or during Dhanteras and Diwali. The count is typically 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala, in a clean, quiet space facing east or north. Cautions: this mantra should be chanted with a pure intention of sharing prosperity, not hoarding; it is advised to perform a brief purification (achamana) before practice. The Padma Nidhi Dhyana is considered a gateway to the other eight nidhis, as per the Kubera Purana, and is revered for bestowing both material wealth and spiritual growth.
