Vidruma Mantra

विद्रुम मन्त्र
Also known as: Coral Gemstone, Mars Gem, Vidruma
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Vidruma Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to the gemstone coral (vidruma), which in Hindu gemology is intimately associated with the planet Mars (Mangala). According to the Ratna Shastra, coral is considered the gem of Mars, and wearing or chanting its mantra is believed to channel the planet's fiery energy for courage, strength, and protection. The mantra itself is a beej (seed) mantra, typically structured as 'Om Vidrumaya Namah' or variations thereof, where the bija 'Vidruma' directly invokes the essence of coral.

Phonetically, the syllables 'vi' and 'dru' resonate with the root chakra, stimulating vitality and passion, while 'ma' grounds the energy. The Mantra Mahodadhi (a key tantric text) mentions that gemstone mantras like this one are to be chanted after the gem is ritually purified and energized, often on a Tuesday—the day ruled by Mars—or during the auspicious hour of sunrise. The traditional purpose of the Vidruma Mantra is to bestow the wearer with the qualities of Mars: courage, assertiveness, leadership, and physical strength.

It is also used for protection against enemies, accidents, and negative influences, as coral is considered a protective stone in Jyotisha texts. For best results, the mantra is recommended to be chanted 108 times daily, preferably while holding a coral bead or wearing a coral ring, in a clean and quiet space. Some traditions prescribe a specific count of 1,000 repetitions over 21 days to fully activate the gem's energy.

Cautions include avoiding chanting during eclipses or while impure, and the coral should be natural (not synthetic) and free from cracks. The Vidruma Mantra is thus a powerful tool for those seeking to harness the martial and protective qualities of Mars through the medium of coral, as outlined in traditional Ratna Shastra and Jyotisha scriptures.
