Gomedha Mantra

गोमेध मन्त्र
Also known as: Hessonite, Rahu Gem, Gomedha
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Gomedha Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to the gemstone hessonite (gomedha), which is intimately associated with the shadow planet Rahu in Vedic astrology. According to the Ratna Shastra, a classical treatise on gemology, gomedha is considered the primary gemstone for Rahu and is prescribed to mitigate the malefic effects of Rahu in a horoscope. The mantra itself, often chanted as 'Om Rahave Namah' or a specific beej mantra, is detailed in Jyotisha texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, which outlines the use of gemstones and mantras for planetary pacification. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) for Rahu is 'Bham' or 'Rām', and the mantra typically incorporates these sounds to invoke the deity's energy.

Phonetically, the mantra's resonance is believed to activate the root chakra and create a protective shield against Rahu's shadowy influences. Traditional purposes of the Gomedha Mantra include protection from Rahu's afflictions such as sudden obstacles, confusion, and delays, as well as success in foreign lands, as Rahu governs foreign connections and unconventional paths. The mantra is also chanted for removal of obstacles in career and spiritual progress. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, a comprehensive mantra compendium, the recommended chanting context is during Rahu Kala (a specific time period each day ruled by Rahu) or on Saturdays, which are associated with Rahu.

The ideal count is 108 repetitions (one mala) daily for 40 days, preferably in a quiet, clean space facing north or east. A hessonite gemstone may be worn or held during chanting to amplify the effect. Cautions: The Gomedha Mantra should be chanted with proper intention and under guidance, as Rahu is a shadow planet with intense energy. It is advised not to chant this mantra after sunset or during eclipses without proper purification.

Additionally, the mantra is not recommended for those with weak mental constitution without first strengthening the mind through grounding practices. The Devi Mahatmya also references the power of gemstones in conjunction with mantras for protection, emphasizing the synergy between the stone and the sound vibration.
